At the times of the Serenissima, people used to wear masks every day; this would allow them to do basically whatever they wanted without being recognized. As you will imagine, the thing became a problem up to the point the doges banned masks from the city, with the only exception of Carnival. Even if the purpose for using masks has changed over the centuries, the way to craft them han’t changed at all. Artisans still apply fabrics, lace, swarovski crystals, beads, sequins, trimming etc. on a paper mache base, according to their imagination. In a small studio near Piazza San Marco, our artisans will guide you through this experience. You will not just attend, but play an active role by crafting a mask yourself. Something unique to bring with you during the next Carnival, or used to adorn your home: your own creation!
In the afternoon join a small group tour to discover the enchanting islands of Murano and Burano and see why the arts of glassblowing and lacemaking made them so famous worldwide.
Rest of the day at leisure and overnight.
